Points to remember during preparation of low cost balanced diet for pregnant and lactating mother :
► Include locally available iron rich leafy vegetables i.e. Basella, Amaranthus, Ipomoea, Colocasia, Moringa leaves, bengal gram leaves, mustard leaves, fenugreek leaves, palak in daily diet.
► Eat every day one fruit like guava, papaya, banana any other locally available fruit
► Prepare tiffin from groundnut, bengal gram
► Include pulses, soybean and other beans in daily diet for protein supplementation
► Intake vitamin A rich vegetables like pumpkin, palak, ripe papaya, carrot, dark green leafy vegetables and sweet potato leaves
► Include calcium rich leafy vegetables and foods like bottle gourd leaves, ash gourd leaves, pumpkin leaves and small fishes, (milk if possible)
► Intake plenty of water

Formula of low cost chattu (supplementary food) for pregnant mother :
Ingredients :
Roasted wheat - 500 g
Roasted bengalgram - 300 g
Sugar - 200 g
Method :
Make flour from roasted wheat and bengalgram. Mix it thoroughly and add 200 g sugar. It can be preserved in air tight container, add water before intake (1 glass water + 5 tea spoonful chattu).
Weaning food for 6 months onward baby
Ingredients :
Puffed rice - 75 g
Roasted bengalgram - 30 g
Roasted groundnut - 25 g
Method :
Make powder separately from puffed rice and roasted bengalgram, mix puffed rice and roasted bengalgram. Make paste from groundnut prior to preparation. Mix it with the puffed rice- bengalgram mixture. Add little sugar / jaggery and water with it.
Eat coloured vegetables and keep away from cancer : Coloured vegetables like tomato, broccoli, red cabbage, carrot, red okra etc. contain anthocyanin and leucopene pigments which have anticarcinogenic effect.
Fish oil - good for cardiac patient
In summer, eat every day one mango to store vitamin A in the body to fulfill the requirement throughout the year
Egg is not ‘hot food’ and it contains easily digestible protein. Eat one egg every day without any tension (exception for cardiac patient)
